Broken & Fogged Window Glass Repair in Boston | IGU Replacement

Need a window repair?

Cloudy windows aren't dirty — they're broken.

If you see condensation, fog, or haze between the panes of your window, the seal on the insulated glass unit (IGU) has failed. No amount of cleaning will fix it. The good news: you don't need a new window. We replace just the glass unit while keeping your existing sash and frame intact — at a fraction of the cost of full window replacement. Glass work is part of our full wood window repair service.

Why insulated glass fails

Modern windows have two or three panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer filled with argon gas. Over time (typically 10–25 years), the seal breaks down, gas escapes, moisture enters, and condensation forms between the panes. This eliminates the insulating benefit and looks bad cosmetically.

Our glass services

IGU (insulated glass unit) replacement

For modern double or triple-pane windows. We measure your existing IGU, order a replacement unit matched to your specifications (low-E coating, gas fill, spacer color), and install it in your existing sash. The window looks and performs like new.

Single-pane glass replacement

For older single-pane wood windows, we cut new glass to size, set it with traditional linseed oil putty, and finish with paint. This preserves the historic character of your windows.

Reglazing

When the glazing putty around old windows cracks and falls out, the glass loses its seal and the wood underneath rots. We remove old putty, prime the wood, and apply fresh glazing compound. This protects both the glass and the surrounding wood.

Tempered or safety glass

Required by code in certain locations (near doors, low to the floor, in shower enclosures). We install tempered glass when needed for safety and code compliance.

Can a broken window seal be repaired, or does the glass need replacing?

The seal itself cannot be repaired. Once the spacer seal on an insulated glass unit fails, the argon is gone and moisture is inside the sealed cavity. Defogging services that drill the glass and vent it will clear the haze for a season or two, but the unit never insulates again. The permanent fix is a new glass unit set into your existing sash, which keeps the original wood window and costs a fraction of a replacement window.

How much does fogged or broken glass replacement cost in Boston?

Price depends on the size of the pane, the frame material, and whether the glass is single pane, insulated, or tempered. These are the ranges we actually invoice:

  • Single pane cut, glazed, and reinstalled: $175 to $395 per pane, most standard sizes $275 to $345

  • Insulated glass unit (double pane): $465 to $1,000, most common sizes around 24 by 24 inches run $465 to $525

  • Storm window glass: $245 to $345

  • Tempered or safety glass: $545 and up, door and oversized panels $1,000 to $1,500

  • Installing glass you supply yourself: $225 to $325

For comparison, replacing the whole window runs $800 to $2,500 per opening. Give us the glass size, the frame material, and whether the window is single or double pane, and we can quote most jobs by email without a site visit.

How long does it take?

Single pane glass we cut and install in the same visit, so a broken pane is usually done in one appointment. Anything wider than 36 inches and all tempered glass has to be ordered. Insulated units are made to measure: we take exact measurements on the first visit, issue a quote, and order the glass once a 30% deposit is in. Factory lead time is 7 to 10 business days for standard units and 3 to 5 weeks for tempered or custom shapes.
