A foggy window is not dirty glass. The seal of the insulated glass unit has failed, and the fix is a new glass unit, not a new window. We replace the fogged or broken glass and keep your existing sash and frame. In the Boston area most double pane windows cost $545 to fix this way, against $800 to $2,500 for a replacement window. Glass work is part of our wood window repair service.
Can foggy windows be fixed without replacing the window?
Yes. Fog, haze or water drops between the panes mean the spacer seal has broken, the gas has escaped and moist air has got inside the sealed unit. The window itself is usually fine. We measure the glass unit, order a new one made to that size, take out the old unit and set the new one into your existing sash. The window looks and insulates like new, and the frame, trim and paint stay as they are.
Can a broken window seal be repaired?
No. Once the seal of an insulated glass unit fails, the gas is gone and moisture is inside, and no repair brings the insulation back. Defogging services drill the glass and vent it. That can clear the haze for a season or two, but the unit stays an uninsulated pane with holes in it. A new glass unit is the permanent fix.
How much does window glass replacement cost in Boston?
The price depends on the size of the glass, the frame material and the type of glass. These are the prices we actually charge, glass and installation included:
Double pane (insulated) glass unit: $545 per window for most double hung windows, $645 for a wood casement. Small units from $465, large picture windows $945 to $1,000.
Single pane glass, cut, set and glazed: $175 to $395 per pane, most standard sizes $275 to $345.
Storm window glass: $245 to $345.
Tempered or safety glass: from $545 for door glass, large panels $1,000 to $1,500.
Installing glass you bought yourself: $225 to $325.
The final price is confirmed after our technician measures the glass.
Broken window glass replacement
A cracked or shattered single pane we cut and install in the same visit, so a broken pane in an old wood window is usually done in one appointment. Glass wider than 36 inches and all tempered glass has to be ordered. A broken double pane unit is replaced the same way as a foggy one: measured, ordered and installed in your existing sash.
Thermal and insulated glass repair
Thermal windows, thermopane and insulated glass are different names for the same sealed double pane unit. We match the replacement to the original: low-E coating, gas fill, spacer color and grid pattern, so the new unit does not stand out next to the others.
How long does it take?
On the first visit we take exact measurements and send you a quote. The glass is ordered once the 30% deposit is in. Standard units take 7 to 10 business days at the factory, tempered and custom shapes longer. Then we come back to install it.
