Window Mechanism Repair in Boston

Stuck window? Broken crank? We fix the mechanisms other companies want to replace entirely.

Modern windows rely on intricate mechanisms — operators, balances, locks, and hinges — that wear out over time. When something fails, replacement window companies typically recommend a brand new window. But in most cases, only the hardware needs to be replaced, not the entire window.

Window mechanisms we repair

Casement window operators

Casement windows open with a crank handle that drives a worm gear. When the gear strips or the operator seizes, the window won't open or close. We replace operators with matching hardware — usually completed in under an hour per window.

Awning window operators

Similar to casement operators but oriented differently. Same repair approach — replace the operator and restore smooth function.

Spring balances (double-hung)

Modern double-hung windows often use spring balance systems instead of cords and weights. When a spring fails, the sash won't stay open. We replace balances with matching units to restore proper counterbalance.

Hinges

Bent, corroded, or worn hinges cause windows to bind, sag, or fail to seal. We replace with matching hardware.

Locks and latches

Broken or worn window locks are a security issue. We repair or replace with hardware that matches your existing finish.

Tilt latches and pivot bars

Allow tilt-in cleaning sashes to function. When these fail, the sash won't tilt safely. Quick replacement restores function.

Why we don't recommend full replacement for hardware issues

Hardware failure is the most common reason homeowners are pressured into replacing their windows. But replacement hardware costs $30–$150 per window, while a new window costs $800–$2,500. Unless the window itself is failing, hardware repair is dramatically more cost-effective.

Same-week service

Most mechanism repairs are scheduled within a week and completed in a single visit. Call (617) 982-1211 for a free estimate.
