Window Weatherstripping & Insulation in Boston
Drafty windows aren't just uncomfortable — they cost you money every winter.
In a typical Boston home, up to 30% of heating costs go through windows. Most of that loss is from air leaks around old or missing weatherstripping, not from the glass itself. New weatherstripping is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make — and it doesn't require replacing your windows.
Signs your windows need weatherstripping
Cold drafts even when the window is closed and locked
Visible gaps between the sash and frame
Old weatherstripping that's compressed, torn, or missing
Window rattles in the wind
Higher-than-expected heating bills
Frost or condensation forming on interior glass in winter
What we install
Compression weatherstripping
For double-hung windows, we install spring bronze, silicone bulb, or foam weatherstripping along the sash perimeter. Spring bronze is the most durable — it lasts 30+ years and is reversible (won't damage historic windows).
Sash channel weatherstripping
For modern sashes, we install integrated channel weatherstripping that seals the sash against the jamb when closed.
Casement and awning seals
Compression bulb seals seal these windows when fully closed. We replace deteriorated seals with new EPDM or silicone bulbs.
Glazing and putty
Air also leaks where the glass meets the sash if glazing putty has cracked or fallen out. We re-glaze with traditional linseed oil putty for historic windows or modern glazing compound for newer windows.
Why this matters in Boston
Boston winters are long and cold. With heating costs averaging $1,500–$3,000 per home per winter, even a 15% reduction in heat loss saves $225–$450 every year. Weatherstripping typically pays for itself within 2–3 winters.
