Before & After: A Snapped Sash Cord Swapped for a Lifetime Bronze Chain

This double-hung window came in with a classic failure: the sash cord had snapped and been knotted back together, so the window would no longer stay open. Before and after tells the whole story.

What failed here

The old waxed cotton cord had frayed through where it rides the pulley, then broke. A knotted cord can't carry the sash weight evenly, so the window drops shut on its own. On a hard-working window in damp New England weather, we recommended a longer-lasting fix.

What we did

We replaced the worn cord with a bronze sash chain - it shrugs off humidity and lasts effectively forever. We serviced the pulley so it turns freely (a rough pulley is what saws through a cord in the first place), measured the chain length precisely, and rebalanced the sash so it "floats" at any height. The original woodwork was left completely untouched.
